(MENAFN - Muscat Daily) The total number of vessels that anchored at Port Sultan Qaboos (PSQ) and Port of Salalah dropped to 910 in the first quarter of 2014 compared to 973 during the same period last year, a decline by 6.5 per cent, according to the figures released by the National Center for Statistics and Information (NCSI).
Figures revealed that the number of vessels docking at PSQ decreased by 7.3 per cent to 688 in the first quarter compared to 742 during the same period last year.
The number of vessels anchoring at Salalah port decreased by 3.9 per cent to 222 this year from 231 during the same period last year.'
Meanwhile, PSQ handled 1.418mn tonnes of cargo at the end of first quarter this year compared to 1.257mn tonns during the same period last year, a 12.7 per cent rise. This has been attributed to increase in the quantity of unloaded cargo handled at PSQ - from 1.007mn tonnes to 1.161mn tonnes, an increase of 15.2 per cent.
Also, the volume of exported cargo touched 256,700 tonnes from 249,800 tonnes registered last year, a 2.8 per cent increase.
On the other hand, the volume of total unloaded and loaded cargo handled at Salalah port increased by 58 per cent in the first quarter this year to 2.675mn tonnes compared to 1.693mn tonnes during the same period last year.
Meanwhile, the total volume of shipped containers reached 2.387mn tonnes this year compared to 1.461mn tonnes during the same period last year, an increase of 63.4 per cent.
