(MENAFN - Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) Assistant Secretary General for Political Affairs Oscar Fernandez-Taranco on Tuesday said efforts on a two-State solution for Palestinians and Israelis have reached an "impasse." Since the deadline for a peace deal passed on April 29, "political efforts towards a negotiated two-state solution have reached an impasse," he told the Security Council in its monthly briefing on the situation in the Middle East.

Fernandez-Taranco said the current pause in the talks allows for both parties to consider their next steps, developing on the intensive engagement by the US over the past nine months.

He stressed that it is the responsibility of the two sides not to take unilateral steps, which will further complicate efforts to return to the negotiations.

He criticized the Israeli forces for killing two Palestinian stone-throwers in the West Bank during demonstrations to commemorate "Nakba Day" (catastrophe) on May 15.

"It is of serious concern that initial information appears to indicate that the two Palestinians killed were both unarmed and appeared to pose no direct threat," he said.

"The UN calls for an independent and transparent investigation by the Israeli authorities into the two deaths and urges Israel to ensure that its security forces strictly adhere to the Basic Principles on the use of force," he added.
