Afghanistan- Badakhshan's Zebak district overrun by insurgents

(MENAFN - Pajhwok Afghan News) FAIZABAD (Pajhwok): The Zebak district of northeastern Badakhshan province has fallen to Taliban as a result of heavy clashes on Friday, a military official said.

Col. Mir Abdul Wahid confirmed to Pajhwok Afghan News the militants overran the remote district at noon. However, he gave no further details.

But a Faizabad-based intelligence officer linked the district's fall to lack of coordination among the security forces. 'The Taliban attacked the district at 7am and captured it 1.30pm.'

A Zebak resident, Abdul Rashid, said: 'The Taliban overran the town so easily.' The security personnel put up little resistance, with local police and uprising members failing to defend their areas.

Meanwhile, Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid claimed the fighters had captured a military base 21 security checkpoints in the district. More than 20 policemen were killed, he said.
