The Commander of the Qatari Amiri Naval Forces, Major General (Navy) H E Abdullah Hassan Al Sulaiti disclosed that security officials must understand the challenges around maritime security. He was speaking at the 7th Doha International Maritime and Defence exhibition conference (DIMDEX) at the Qatar National convention Centre (QNCC), yesterday.
Al Sulaiti stressed that modern-day maritime security challenges are environmental pollution, organised crime, military conflicts, obstruction of navigation routes, and advanced technologies.
He, however, emphasised the need for stakeholders to utilise modern technologies to“establish security, consolidate stability and prevent them from falling into irresponsible hands.”
“This major event is gaining increasing importance among specialists in the security and defence industry in light of the growing need to meet, discuss and work together in this vital and ever-evolving field,” he said.
DIMDEX, which will conclude tomorrow, allows exhibitors to showcase their latest, state-of-the-art technologies and products to industry personnel to initiate significant deals and partnerships.
Meanwhile, in a statement, DIMDEX Chairman Staff Brigadier (Sea) Abdulbaqi Saleh Al Ansari disclosed that this year's participation is the largest since the exhibition's launch in 2008. Besides, 46 Qatari companies, including Barzan Holdings, are participating in this year's event. He added that six defence ministers and 14 chiefs of staff from participating countries were present at the opening ceremony. Also, he noted that the 85 participating delegations show strength in relations between Qatar and other countries.
The total number of participating official delegations from defence ministers, chiefs of staff and commanders of forces reached 85 delegations, which exceeds the volume of participation in similar international exhibitions and reflects the strength of relations that links Qatar with other countries.
DIMDEX 2022 is being held under 'Connecting the World's Maritime Defence and Security Community.' Qatar is highly represented in the exhibition with the Ministry of Defence, Amiri Naval Forces, Qatar Amiri Airforce, Ministry of Interior, General Directorate of Coasts and Borders Security, Milipol Qatar Committee pavilion, Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Barzan Holdings and other Qatari companies – showcasing simulators, naval vessels and other military weaponry and technology. Significant delegations from Turkey totalling 32 companies from the Turkish defence industry are also on display at the exhibition, including Presidency of Defense Industries (SSB), Anadolu Shipyard, Ares Shipyard, Armelsan, Aselsan, ASFAT, BITES, Turkish Aerospace Industries, among others. Turkey's first armoured unmanned surface vessel (AUSV), ULAQ, is also among the products being showcased.
Other security and defence companies include Boeing, Thales, Leonardo, Milrem Robotics, Raytheon Technologies, and many more.
The Middle East Naval Commanders Conference will be held today, with the commander of the US fifth fleet expected to discuss 'Resilience in the Maritime Domain.'
Several Memorandums of Understandings (MoUs) and agreements are expected to be signed at the biennial event as regional and global navies add the latest technologies to their defence systems boosting their naval capabilities.
