Palestine becomes Interpol member

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) TOKYO, Sept 27 (KUNA) -- The Interpol General Assembly on Wednesday voted to admit Palestine and the Solomon Islands as new member countries, according to an official statement from the organization.

The application was approved by a more than two-thirds majority vote at Interpol's General Assembly, currently meeting in Beijing for its 86th annual session, it said. As a result, the membership of the world policing body now totals 192.

With nearly 1,000 participants from 156 countries, making it one of the largest General Assemblies in the organization's history, the four-day conference starting from Tuesday sees police thought leaders forge operational alliances to tackle the crime threats, it said.

Among the key issues addressed by delegates, including 62 police chiefs and more than 30 Ministers of Security, Interior and Justice, is the importance of frontline officers having real-time access to global policing data through a single and neutral platform.

In reaction to the new development, several Arab countries and organizations have expressed their joy over the Palestinian achievement, saying that it was part of the ongoing process to achieve further international recognition for Palestine. (end) mk.gta
