Greta Thunberg Joins Pro-Palestine Chants at Amsterdam Climate March

(MENAFN) Renowned climate change activist Greta Thunberg found herself in the midst of a Political controversy during Amsterdam's largest-ever environmental march on Sunday. While addressing the audience of tens of thousands at the Climate Crisis Coalition march, Thunberg ceded her speaking time to Afghan activist Sahar Shirzad and a Palestinian woman in support of climate justice and international solidarity.

However, the event took an unexpected turn when another environmental protester interrupted Thunberg's speech, expressing discontent over the perceived politicization of the demonstration. The protester, wearing a jacket with the insignia of Dutch political party Water Natuurlijk, grabbed Thunberg's microphone, declaring, "I have come here for a climate demonstration, not a political view."

Security swiftly removed the protester from the stage as Thunberg urged calm. In response, members of the audience began chanting, "No climate justice on occupied land," a sentiment that Thunberg joined.

Later, Sahar Shirzad revealed to the Associated Press that Thunberg had willingly given them the opportunity to speak, emphasizing the importance of amplifying the voices of those fighting for freedom and justice. The incident unfolded as a small group, including the two women, had briefly chanted pro-Palestinian slogans and waved flags near the front of the crowd before Thunberg took the stage.

The occurrence highlights the intersectionality of activism, showcasing the challenges of navigating political sensitivities within the broader context of global movements such as climate justice. Thunberg's involvement in the pro-Palestine chants underscores the interconnectedness of social justice causes and the evolving dynamics within the climate activism sphere.
