DUBAI, 21st September, 2022 (WAM) -- Alisher Salomov, Consul-General of Uzbekistan in Dubai and the Northern Emirates, lauded the selection of his country as chair of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) for the fourth time, welcoming the membership of the UAE as a 'dialogue partner' in the organisation.

In his statement to the Emirates News Agency (WAM), Salomov highlighted the importance of the 'Samarkand Declaration' of the SCO's Council of Heads of State, which is a leading initiative to enhance SCO's capabilities and intensify joint efforts to guarantee peace and stability, in addition to promoting trade and economic cooperation, and addressing challenges related to climate change and food security.

From 2017 to 2021, Shavkat Mirziyoyev, President of Uzbekistan, launched 45 initiatives during the conferences of the SCO Summit to promote cooperation in politics, trade, transport, logistics, innovation and other areas, he added.

Meetings of security council secretaries and the launch of a mechanism for obtaining observer status in the organisation were also held in Tashkent, he further added.

As part of Uzbekistan's presidency of the SCO's current term from 2021 to 2022, it held some 80 events in Tashkent and the cities of Nukus, Bukhara, Fergana, Khiva and Samarkand, to discuss important topics and challenges and complete the coordination process relating to 37 SCO documents within one year. It also hosted the several of SCO's top events, Salomov noted.

He then highlighted the importance of the initiatives launched by Mirziyoyev at the Samarkand SCO Summit, highlighting his country's plans to cooperate with its partners to utilise the SCO's capacities to help accelerate the implementation of transport corridors, such as the roads linking Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, China, Termez, Mazar-i-Sharif, Kabul and Peshawar, and other vital roads which are important considering current geo-economic conditions.

The SCO Summit was held in Samarkand from 15th to 16th September and was attended by its eight member states, which are Uzbekistan, Pakistan, Russia, China, Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan and India.
