Ukraine is concerned Western backing may dwindle as media shows no interest in war

(MENAFN) Ukraine's conflict with Russia is entering its fifth month, raising local fears that declining media coverage may lead to a gradual loss of western backing at a time when Moscow is making modest but steady advances on the frontlines.

The fear reflects an increasing normalization of the conflict, with huge portions of the country feeling disconnected from the fighting in eastern Donbas — as it becomes evident that deaths are escalating and economic losses are skyrocketing. According to Lesia Vasylenko, an opposition MP with the liberal Holos party, “It’s a very real threat, that people get tired psychologically.”

Global media exposure has fell noticeably in the previous two months, she stated, and “as that number goes down further, there’s a very high risk of the support from the west going down”.

Ukraine has been increasingly reliant on Western assistance as the war has progressed, both in terms of armament and humanitarian assistance, and will require foreign relief funds to restore towns and cities damaged by the Russians in the early stages of the conflict. Its treasury is empty.
