Jordan- Solar power project opens at Petra
(MENAFN- Jordan Times) A $5 million solar energy project, which was inaugurated in Petra on Friday, will generate 250 kilowatts of electricity to cover the energy needs of tourist and service facilities in the ancient city, 235km south of Amman.
Deputising for His Majesty King Abdullah, Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Alaa Batayneh inaugurated the venture, implemented under a grant from the Mitsubishi Corporation.
The project will supply restaurants, museums, an emergency clinic and the Nazzal camp in Petra with their needs of electricity, estimated at 100 kilowatts.
The solar power project will also put an end to the environmental, visual and noise pollution problems caused by the use of diesel generators in the area.
The leakage of diesel into the soil causes a change in the colour of rocks in the rose-red city, in addition to the smell emanated by the generators.
During the inauguration ceremony, Mikio Sasaki, chairman of the Jordanian-Japanese Friendship Society and senior corporate adviser of the Mitsubishi Corporation, said the project would help protect archaeological sites in Jordan and provide renewable energy.
