Washington claims NATO is working on new Russia plan

(MENAFN) During a recent Senate Foreign Relations Committee hearing, United States Assistant Secretary for European and Eurasian Affairs James O’Brien revealed that NATO is in the process of formulating a new strategy to address challenges posed by Russia. O’Brien emphasized that the United States is firmly supportive of Ukraine, asserting that providing substantial material support is crucial. He highlighted ongoing efforts to bolster Kiev, noting that the European Union has initiated negotiations for Ukraine's membership, a move aimed at fostering internal reforms within the country.

Moreover, O’Brien underscored the financial backing from G7 nations, which includes redirecting earnings from Russia’s frozen sovereign assets to Ukraine, amounting to an estimated USD50 billion this year designated for defense purposes. The United States official also pointed out NATO's willingness to welcome Ukraine into its ranks once certain criteria for membership are met.

O’Brien stressed the importance of enabling Ukraine to achieve success in its conflict as a pathway to achieving peace. He acknowledged progress made by Ukrainian forces on the battlefield and emphasized NATO’s role in strengthening collective support for Kiev. Looking ahead, O’Brien mentioned NATO’s intention to develop a comprehensive strategy toward Russia in the coming months, aimed at maintaining unity among member states in future engagements with Moscow.

Furthermore, O’Brien highlighted the consensus among NATO allies regarding China’s role as a significant supporter of Russia’s actions in Ukraine. This acknowledgment, he noted, is a crucial step in enhancing the alliance’s strategic framework to effectively address geopolitical challenges in the region.

In response to ongoing Western military assistance to Ukraine, Russia has consistently criticized such measures, arguing that increasing weapon supplies only prolongs the conflict and exacerbates humanitarian consequences without altering its inevitable outcome.
