Doha, Qatar: Diverse institutions in the country offer an impressive array of services and programmes to support and empower students preparing for their university journey.

Institutions, including the Qatar Career Development Centre (QCDC), Qatar National Library (QNL), and Carnegie Mellon University in Qatar (CMU-Q), offer students an array of resources tailored to assist students across different majors.

QCDC offers a range of career guidance programmes and services to assist students in their university and career decision-making process.

“QCDC's Majors Guide, a one-stop-shop for all the majors offered in Qatar, complemented by dedicated sections brimming with advice and information on how to choose best and prepare for undergraduate studies,” said Career Programs and Services Manager at QCDC Saad Al Kharji, speaking to The Peninsula.

She also advises students to visit QCDC's booths at the university and career exhibitions, organised by public and private institutions throughout the year; take advantage of QCDC's job-shadowing programs and initiatives, along with workshops and seminars focused on university preparation, study skills, and career planning; and utilise QCDC's Virtual Career Advising Sessions: the tailored one-to-one sessions conducted by qualified experts in career guidance and development for students and graduates.

“There is no definitive equation to choosing a university major, as it is a personal journey that requires self-reflection, research, and guidance. Balance your ambitions with practical experience and embrace the opportunity to explore your potential to make an informed decision that aligns with your passions and aspirations,” said Al Kharji.

The Qatar National Library offers various resources tailored to assist students across different majors. Students gain a detailed overview of subjects crucial to their field of study, starting with library guides.

“QNL's extensive library guides and wealth of academic resources online are a testament to their commitment to supporting this lifelong learning process. Moreover, QNL's diverse educational and recreational programmes further supplement this learning. QNL facilities facilitate a conducive study environment and serve as a key tool for student success,” said Eiman Saleh Alshamari, Head of the Young Adults' Library.

QNL also offers students specialised support, such as writing and citation assistance.

“The Writing Support service aids in improving academic writing skills, essential for university success. Moreover, Citation Support assists students in understanding and applying citation rules effectively, which is crucial for maintaining academic honesty.

“These resources are part of QNL's holistic academic support strategy aimed at fostering a successful learning environment,” said Alshamari.

Most universities in the country offer pre-college programmes that introduce students to different majors.

Carnegie Mellon University in Qatar offers several pre-university programmes, including the Summer College Preview Program and Experience CMU-Q.

“These programmes introduce students to the campus and our programmes. As well, each academic programme hosts workshops that are specific to that field. This is a helpful way to learn what you would be studying at CMU-Q and to talk to current students and faculty members about the programme,” said Senior Associate Dean for Education, Teaching Professor, English, Dudley Reynolds.

In advice to a student who intends to apply to CMU-Q, he said,“The programmes at Carnegie Mellon University in Qatar are quantitative so you will need a solid foundation in math and science. We suggest that all students, especially those applying to computer science and information systems, take coursework in programming. And, of course, proficiency in English is essential.”

“Beyond coursework, we are looking for well-rounded students who show that they are motivated learners who are engaged in the community. Preparing for university includes following your passions in high school, including in areas like sports, the arts, or community service,” he added.
