Trump Extends Lead Over DeSantis in Hypothetical 2024 GOP Primary, New Poll Shows

(MENAFN) Former President Donald trump is widening his lead over Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, who is expected to be his top rival in the 2024 Republican presidential primary if he runs, according to a recent poll of potential GOP candidates. The latest survey by Quinnipiac University found that Trump holds 46% of the support among Republican and Republican-leaning voters in a hypothetical primary field, while DeSantis received 32%.

This is a significant change from Quinnipiac's February poll, where Trump held just a 6-percentage-point lead over DeSantis, with 42% to 36%. When asked in the new poll who they would choose in a head-to-head matchup between Trump and DeSantis, 51% of respondents picked the former president, while 40% chose the governor.

Despite DeSantis' growing national profile and buzz in the GOP conversation, the new poll shows no erosion in Trump's support among Republican voters. Quinnipiac's polling analyst Tim Malloy noted that Trump is enjoying a bump in his lead in the primary.

The survey, which was conducted among 677 Republican and Republican-leaning voters, had a margin of error of 3.8 percentage points. As DeSantis faces increasing criticism from Trump and other potential presidential candidates, he has not yet announced his widely expected presidential campaign, although he has taken early steps to indicate that he may launch a bid soon.
