Four Suspects detained, charged in connection with assassination of Haitian president Jovenel Moise

(MENAFN) Federal agents in the US have arrested and charged four suspects in Florida in connection to the assassination of Haitian President Jovenel Moise in 2021. The murder created a power vacuum in the Caribbean nation, and provided an opportunity for powerful gangs to take control of much of the capital, Port-au-Prince.

The Justice Department said that 11 individuals are now in US custody and charged by a South Florida grand jury in connection with the murder. The latest arrests include three individuals: Antonio “Tony” Intriago, the owner of Counter Terrorist Unit Security (CTU); Arcangel Pretel Ortiz, the operator of the affiliated CTU Federal Academy LLC; and Walter Veintemilla, the head of Miramar-based Worldwide Capital Lending Group. These three are accused of supporting a conspiracy to kidnap or kill the president of Haiti, according to US authorities. The fourth suspect, Frederick Bergmann, is accused of conspiring to smuggle ballistic vests for former Colombian soldiers who are alleged to have carried out the shooting of Moise. US officials revealed that their investigation is focused on weapons, ballistic vests, and financing used in the deadly plot.

The assassination of President Moise caused great turmoil in Haiti and the nation’s security was severely undermined. With the president gone, a political void was created, which made it possible for powerful gangs to take over the capital and other parts of the country.
