Historically, Italy is one of the first countries in which fencing developed, dating back from the Renaissance until the setting of the sport's rules in the 19th century. Such tradition is carried on in international tournaments and in the Olympic Games, where Italy holds the record of the most medals ever won, with a score of 130.
