Doha: The Anatomical Pathology Training Program of the Department of Laboratory medicine and Pathology at Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC), has achieved prestigious accreditation from the Accreditation Council of graduate Medical Education – International (AGCME-I).

The programme is among five pathology specialities to achieve this distinction outside the USA and is only the second pathology training programme in the Gulf region to be accredited by ACGME-I. The accreditation currently covers a total of 12 residents and is operational effective from July 1, 2021.

ACGME-I accreditation demonstrates that graduate medical education programmes outside the United States meet well defined standards for institutional, foundational and advanced speciality education. It also ensures that the core education principles of ACGME-I are upheld within each accredited programme. The ACGME-I employs a comprehensive, peer-review process to evaluate, improve and publicly recognise programmes and sponsoring institutions in graduate medical education that meet their high and demanding standards of educational quality.

Anatomical pathology is the study of organs and tissues to determine the causes and effects of particular diseases.

Dr. Einas Al Kuwari, Chairperson of Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathology said the Anatomical Pathology Training Program joins other HMC training programmes which have also been recognixed by the ACGME-I, with the continued support of the Medical Education Department.

“The accreditation of the Anatomical Pathology Program is an achievement that we are very proud of, and a big step forward to enable other training programmes in laboratory medicine to be accredited such as Hematology, Transfusion Medicine, Clinical Chemistry, Immunology, Microbiology and Diagnostic Genetics,” Dr. Al Kuwari said.

Dr. Al Kuwari has invited recent graduate Qatari doctors to consider this programme and increase the ranks of national doctors in this unique speciality.
