Kuwait takes part in IAEA project to improve foer quality

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) VIENNA, Sept 19 (KUNA) -- A Kuwaiti researcher is taking part in a project by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to develop smart agriculture practices and improve the quality of fodder.
Dr. Habiba Al-Mani'e, representing Kuwait Institute for Scientific Research (KISR), said the project envisages producing new kinds of fodder and developing agricultural practices that can adapt to the impacts of climate change.
"These practices can mitigate the impacts of draught and soil salinity, thus having the potential to increase food production," she told KUNA on Thursday.
Dr. Al-Mani'e made the comments on the sidelines of the 63rd Annual Regular Session of the IAEA General Conference is being held between September 16 and 20 at the Vienna International Centre.
"The project uses nuclear technology to bring about a major genetic shift for seeds to adapt to hot weather such as the one in Kuwait.
"Seeds brought from Kuwait will be exposed to radiation to examine how far they are resilient against climate change, draught and salinity. Based on the subsequent genetic studies, new hybrids will be developed from different breeds," she revealed.
Dr. Al-Mani'e highlighted the importance of this project in increasing the productivity of the flora and fauna resources in Kuwait, reaffirming KISR commitment to cooperation with the IAEA and UN Food Agency the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) in this regard. (end)
