Afghanistan celebrates Mountain Day for first time


(MENAFN- Pajhwok Afghan News) KABUL (Pajhwok): The ministries of agriculture and energy and water celebrated the International Mountain Day for the first time in Afghanistan in coordination with university teachers and students.

Hashmatullah Ghafoori, deputy head of irrigation and natural water reservoirs department, told the event participants in Kabul that 80 percent of clean water came from mountains.

Referring to high rising mountains in the country, he said: €œOur mountains are the best source of sweet water and they protect us from natural disasters and storms.€

He said the Himalaya and Hindukush Mountains ranges were 3,500 kilometres long and as many as 250 million people lived on their hills.

Mohammad Rafai Qazizada, head of the irrigation and natural reservoirs department, said 22 percent of Afghanistan€™s population of lived in mountainous areas.

He added Afghanistan was bestowed with fresh eco system as a result of its mountainous geography.
