The Department of Transport Conducts 10 School Visits


The Department of Transport (DoT) in Abu Dhabi conducted field visits to 10 different schools among the Emirate aimed at educating the students about the sustainable and active transport modes options. This was part of the “Together to a Sustainable and Active Transport” Initiative conducted by the Department and in cooperation with number of its stakeholders: Abu Dhabi Police, Department of Education and Knowledge, Department of Health, Environment Agency, Abu Dhabi Sports Council and Abu Dhabi Cycling Club. “This initiative is motivated by the need for finding innovative solutions to reduce congestion, overcome its negative impact, spread awareness about safe transport options to and from schools and identify students’ duties and responsibilities in increasing the level of awareness about sustainable transport,” said Eng. Badr Al Qamzi, Director of Integrated Transport Planning. Al Qamzi added that it is important to use alternative transport modes that are more sustainable to enhance the “Transport Mobility Management (TMM)” that is also known as “Intelligent Transport”. TMM aims to increase the use of sustainable transport modes and avoid congestion in accordance to the Surface Transport Master Plan for Abu Dhabi. DoT is developing walking and cycling infrastructures according to the highest safety and sustainable standards in aim to encourage the students to walk or cycle to school. The DoT team presented training and educational workshops on cycling as well. The workshops aimed to encourage active transport modes that can offer many benefits to people. The workshops included introducing the audience to security and health procedures, the benefits of exercises and healthy nutrition, introducing sustainable and active transport modes available to the public and discussing the benefits of reducing the amount of pollution on the environment. It is worth to mention that the awareness initiatives of the transport management program were designed to target the public and educational sector. This initiative specifically focused on students, parents, and the education and operation sectors to encourage the change of behavior towards the best options of transport that benefit the environment, society and individuals.
