WTTC: Travel, tourism's climate footprint emissions significantly decreases

(MENAFN) WTTC’s recent Environmental & Social Research (ESR), formed in cooperation with the Ministry of Tourism of Saudi Arabia, announced that in 2023 Travel & Tourism made about 6.5 percent of all emissions worldwide, decreasing from 7.8 percent in 2019, when Travel & Tourism was at its top.

The research shows a significant improvement with the sector’s economic contribution developing quicker than its environmental influence.

In the previous year, Travel & Tourism’s contribution to international GDP nearly reached pre-pandemic levels at USD9.9 trillion, just 4 percent shy of the sector’s high point.

But, in 2023 international GHG emissions were 12 percent lower the 2019 highest, with GHG strength (emissions per unit of GDP) decreased 10.2 percent through this time. This illustrates the sector’s development is becoming cleaner.

“Our sector is proving that we can grow responsibly," said Julia Simpson, WTTC Leader & CEO. "We’re decoupling growth from emissions - Travel & Tourism is expanding economically while lowering its environmental footprint.”
