Colombo, July 1: India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Foreign Minister S condoled the death of the Sri Lankan Tamil leader R.Sampanthan in Colombo at the age of 91.

Dr. S. Jaishankar on X:“Deeply saddened to hear about the passing away of Sri Lankan Tamil leader Shri R. Sampanthan. Recall my many meetings and conversations with him over several decades. He dedicated his entire life fighting for the equality, dignity and justice forTamils in Sri Lanka.” / X

Sampanthan was the leader of the Ilankai Tamil Arasu Katchi (ITAK) and the Tamil National Alliance (TNA). He was a member of parliament from 1977 and played a leading role in shaping Tamil politics and the approach of the Tamils to the ethnic question in Sri Lanka over the years through negotiations with successive governments from the 1970s.
