Presidents of Turkey, Greece end long-standing tensions among both countries

(MENAFN) In accordance with a well-known Greek specialist on dispute resolution, the presidents of both Turkey and Greece, who recently won reelection in the months of June and May, are serious and well-suited to end long-standing tensions among the two countries as they sustain an ongoing decrease in hostilities.

On the Greek side, the nomination of liberal and pro-resolution George Gerapetritis, who is close to premier Kyriakos Mitsotakis, to replace the hardline Nikos Dendias as foreign minister, for instance, demonstrates Mitsotakis' determination to reach a settlement, according to Alexis Heraclides for Anadolu.

“The strong mandate he got in the June 25 elections and his profile as a defender of Greek interests also give Mitsotakis confidence and authority to elevate the current positive climate with Türkiye and finally resolve the long-standing dispute between the two countries,” stated Heraclides, prominent expert on Greek-Turkish relations at Panteion University in Athens.

Nevertheless, He pointed that greek society and politics are characterized by a strong sense of nationalism as well as anti-Turkish sentiment, which has posed a significant barrier to a solution among both NATO partners.
