Poll: Over Half Of Belgians Want Monarchy To Continue


(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) BRUSSELS, July 20 (KUNA) -- A majority of Belgians have expressed their support for monarchy rule in the country, according to a poll published here Thursday.
57 percent of Belgians said they would keep the monarchy, while 28 percent wanted a republic, according to the survey conducted on behalf of a number of Belgian media outlets, Belgian news agency Belga reported.
1,000 Belgians were surveyed for the poll leading up to Belgium's national holiday and King Philippe's ten-year reign on 21 July.
62 percent think King Philippe has evolved positively over the past ten years, it showed.
In his address to the nation today on the eve of the National Day, King Philippe spoke of the many challenges that the people of Belgium faced in recent years and the solidarity and spontaneous and pragmatic approach that had allowed us to face them. (end)
