Google Is In Trouble With Search Results Listing Fake Sites!

(MENAFN- B2Press) According to estimates, 8.5 billion searches are made worldwide daily, and google is in trouble with fake sites. Google, which is the most visited website in the world, has fake sites that get essential rankings in the search results of corporate brands that threaten brand reputation and cyber security.

Google, the world's most visited website with 89.3 billion monthly visits according to 2022 data from Similarweb, which focuses on search analytics and website traffic, is in trouble with search results that list fake sites with harmful content that it has difficulty controlling. According to internet developers, software developers and cyber security experts, Google, which has been estimated to host an average of 8.5 billion searches every day in the past months, has managed to rank in the search results where the names of corporate brands are mentioned, such as ".pl", ".ca", Websites with extensions such as ".es", ".it", ".de" are on the rise. Increasing support requests and complaints from Turkish and foreign developers and content producers on platforms like Quora, Google Community, Y Combinator, and R10 have also proven this situation.

Mehmet Emre Baş, Marketing Manager of DNS security company DNSSense, who shared his assessment, said,“Google has been having difficulties for a while in blocking spam sites appearing in search results and classifying domains (domains). Especially in the Google Turkey search engine, sites with harmful content that manage to rank higher by imitating brand names and content both damage the reputation of corporate companies and increase cyber security risks.

Ranking in 12 thousand words in 1 week, close to 20 thousand visits per month

In the case study carried out in this context, the statistics of one of the fake sites that appeared in the search results for the domain name of a technology company in Turkey were analyzed through a search engine optimization tool. It was noted that the fake website examined gained rankings in 12,200 keywords in Google Turkey in a 1-week period, and its estimated monthly average traffic reached 20 thousand.

Stating that the website in question can reach the first page of Google search results for some keywords, Mehmet Emre Baş said, "While this is the case in organic search results, the fake websites we mentioned are also positioned as advertisers in paid search results. These sites, which advertise with keywords that manipulate Google search results, pose a severe security hazard by ranking at the top.

Artificial intelligence classifies fake search results as a malicious site

Noting that one of the reasons for the rapid rise of fake domain names in search results is that they create pages by opening many subdomains, DNSSense Marketing Manager Mehmet Emre Baş said,“Our Hub53 unit is an artificial intelligence unit that keeps the historical and contextual record of all domains on the internet, examined with Cyber X-Ray, our supported domain classification tool. As a result of this examination, we determined that the current subdomain number of the site in question is 824. In addition, Cyber X-Ray classified three different sites that Google could not correctly classify as 'spam' or malicious sites. "The results show that Google has been unable to detect and remove these sites from its index, which have been manipulating search results and paving the way for phishing and phishing attacks in the past two years.”

“The reputation and safety of brands are at stake”

Stating that fake search results are noticed by users with cyber security awareness and internet literacy and that these users do not visit these sites being aware of the risks, Mehmet Emre Baş concluded his evaluations with the following statements:“Still, not every user or every company employee has the same level of cyber security knowledge. These fake sites, which carry malicious software that can pass many firewall software, threaten both the reputation and cyber security of brands. Some users may experience significant losses by entering their credit card information on these sites. Google offers developer teams and cybersecurity experts a tool to report these sites. Brands that want to ensure user, employee and company safety should report the search results listing the fake sites they detect to Google.
