Doha: Qatar's resilient economy can be further well-diversified by use of strategic immigration and labour management with a high-skilled workforce, according to Azeem Mohiuddin, Partner at Fragomen's Doha office.

“We believe that strategic immigration and labour management can help Qatar achieve its goal of having a highly skilled workforce and continuing to diversify its economy. It would be prudent to evaluate initiatives taken by governments around the world and adopt best practices with a view to attract the best talent” he noted.

The US-headquartered firm is a world leader in providing immigration services and has over 6,000 immigration professionals and staff in over 60 offices across the Americas, EMEA, and Asia Pacific and offers immigration support in more than 170 countries worldwide.

With Fragomen operating in Qatar for the past 10 years, Mohiuddin is well-versed in the country's immigration and labour process and states that numerous initiatives have been introduced to make the process faster and more convenient.

“The Qatari government has rolled out a number of successful initiatives related to the immigration process, including the use of advance technology and digitalization of work permits and visa applications”, said Mohiuddin.

He remarked that the ministries constantly play a vital part in enabling immigration services to operate at a smoother pace.

He said“In particular, we have been very pleased to see the continued efforts of the Ministry of Labour to develop and update numerous e-services. These efforts are an important tool for the government in meeting its economic objectives of Vision 2030.”

During the past 17 years, Fragomen has been expanding its presence in the Middle East, adding a new office in Riyadh in 2022 and launching its business traveler offering, Nomadic, in Dubai in 2023. The firm counts five branches in the region and recently celebrated the 10-year anniversary of its Doha office.

Since its inception in the country, the firm has capitalised on the events that took place while enhancing impressive frameworks for individuals.

Mohiuddin said that“As a global organisation, we have deep immigration experience of different jurisdictions around the world which allows us to be at the forefront of the industry and that is why governments have sought our advice when developing new immigration frameworks. Additionally, we were honoured to work with a number of companies and individuals in advance of and during the recent World Cup which saw a massive increase in the need to mobilise workers into the country.”

He emphasised that the attorneys and professionals working at Fragomen are involved with several organisations to give back to the Qatari and wider communities as well as helping train future immigration professionals.

“In Qatar, we have established an internship programme with several universities whereby we provide vital business experience to students of the country. We are also very proud of our long-standing partnership with the American Chamber of Commerce in Qatar (AmCham), of which I serve on the Board, and the opportunities we have to support US business interests in Qatar.”

Mohiuddin also highlighted that Fragomen“Plays a key role in various economic strategies of the region, such as the Qatar National Vision 2030, as we work with international companies to help move their global talent to the country and ensure compliance with local and regional laws.”

“In this regard, we are proud to represent some of the largest organisations in the world across a number of industries, including energy, technology, defence, and aviation amongst others,” he added.

The company is a long-time leader in the immigration tech space and continues to lead the way in the digitisation of the immigration journey. It has also created Fragomen Technologies Inc., a Fragomen subsidiary that focuses on the nexus of law and technology to develop its global tech offering.
