(MENAFN) Noor Jehan, a 17-year-old African elephant in Pakistan’s Karachi Zoo, has passed away after an accident left her unable to stand up on her own. The incident has once again highlighted the need for better animal care in Pakistan’s zoos. African elephants typically have a life expectancy of up to 70 years, making Noor Jehan quite young.
International animal welfare charity Four Paws confirmed the elephant’s death on Sunday, expressing sadness over the situation. “With a broken heart we must inform you that Noor Jehan passed away this morning,” the charity tweeted.
Four Paws vet Amir Khalil noted that it was tragic that Noor Jehan had to die at such a young age when she could have had many more years ahead of her.
Karachi Zoo has long struggled with a lack of funding and, consequently, a lack of quality care for its animals, according to animal rights groups. Four Paws has pointed out that the zoo’s predicament is similar to that of zoos in many parts of the country.
In recent years, the zoo has been the site of several other incidents, including the deaths of two lions due to asphyxiation after handlers attempted to smoke them out of their den, and the deaths of several white tiger cubs. These tragedies underscore the need for better care and attention to be paid to the animals living in captivity.
