Türkiye Leaves Door Open for Sweden to Join NATO, Depending on its Will, Determination

(MENAFN) Türkiye’s presidential spokesman, Ibrahim Kalin, announced on Saturday that Ankara has left the door open for Stockholm's bid to join NATO if it shows will and determination. However, the pace and completion of the process will depend on Sweden's steps.

Kalin acknowledged that Sweden's new government is sincere and diligent in this regard but does not have enough instruments to take legal action to address Türkiye's security concerns. He further stated that a new counterterrorism law will enter into force on June 1, which will allow Sweden to take more decisive, concrete, and fruitful steps to address Türkiye's security concerns.

Sweden and Finland made a joint application, but Finland has taken a constructive stance on both the structuring of the PKK and Fetullah Terrorist Organization (FETO), the lifting of restrictions in the defense industry, and the inclusion of Türkiye in programs such as PESCO within the European Union. PESCO is part of the EU's security and defense policy.

In contrast, Finland has adopted a more transparent and fruitful stance regarding Türkiye's demands, said Kalin.

The statement highlights the importance of addressing security concerns and taking necessary steps towards a peaceful and stable relationship between Türkiye and its allies. The situation remains fluid, and it remains to be seen how Sweden will respond to Türkiye's overture and whether they will take necessary steps to address security concerns.
