Colombia proposes new strategy to combat "cocaine hippos"

(MENAFN) Anibal Gaviria, the governor of Colombia's Antioquia department in the nation's northwest, declared on Thursday that the country intended to "translocate" some 70 of its so-called "cocaine hippos" abroad. The animals, possibly Pablo Escobar's strangest legacies, are going to be delivered to Mexico and India.

According to Gaviria of the nearby Blu Radio, there are currently 130 to 160 hippos living in Colombia. In the first half of this year, the governor declared, 60 of the hippos are scheduled to go to India and 60 of the animals, a mix of males and females, are scheduled to move to Mexico.

The hippos are going to be flown into their new habitat in specially constructed "crates," according to Gaviria. He said that the new host nations " have the capacity to receive them, to accommodate them properly and to control their reproduction," emphasizing that New Delhi has mostly funded the approaching operation.

Addressing Colombia specifically, the transfer would significantly lower the present hippo population, making it simpler for the government to control the surviving animals after a protracted struggle. Gaviria claims that in order to securely " keep the animals, control their reproduction and risks to the population," the government wants to create a sanctuary for hippos in the nation.
