Russian Federation Council Condemns Burning Of Holy Quran As 'Barbarism, Xenophobia'

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) MOSCOW, Feb 4 (kuna) --- The Russian Federation Council, upper house of parliament, described Saturday the burning of the Holy Quran by extremists as an act of 'barbarism and xenophobia,' said its chairwoman Valentina Matviyenko.
'This is blasphemy, this is a crime, this is inciting national hatred. People encroach on what is sacred to Muslim believers,' Matviyenko was quoted by Russia's TASS news agency as saying.
She also called on European parliamentarians to publicly condemn such acts in several European countries and hold those responsible accountable.
'Let's send on behalf of the Council of Federation appeals to the European parliaments for a serious condemnation of such manifestations and a proposal to take all measures to prevent such blasphemous actions,' said Matviyenko.
Several European right-wing extremists, including Rasmus Paludan, had burnt copies of the Holy Quran in Sweden, Denmark and Holland. (end)
