Relief Work In Afghanistan Impossible Without Women -- UN Official

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) NEW YORK, Dec 30 (KUNA) -- Humanitarian operations in Afghanistan cannot be conducted without women's participation, a UN official has affirmed.
UN Resident Coordinator in Afghanistan Ramiz Alakbarov told a news conference in New York, hours ago, that the UN mission in the country is talking with the authorities to find a solution to the current situation.
He was alluding to a recent decision by the Afghan authorities to ban women from working in humanitarian organizations and NGOs, a move described by UN officials as a big blow to communities and segments mostly in need for aid, namely women and children.
Alakbarov added that he would visit Afghanistan in the coming few days to try persuade leaders to solve the situation and re-examine consequences of their decision.
Up to 70 percent of UN humanitarian programs in Afghanistan are executed in partnership with NGOs, national and international agencies, he said, affirming that the Afghan leaders' decision has adversely affected work of these relief entities.
Practically, when a team of the humanitarian agencies assesses needs in a certain village in Afghanistan, the work covers both men and women, and in this case where the community is conservative, women workers are needed to deal with female Afghans, he explained. Therefore, without women's participation, the relief activities will be greatly disrupted.
Alakbarov added that he had held talks with the Afghan minister of economy, focusing on the need to observe local traditions and norms of the Islamic Shariaa (law), as interpreted by the ruling movement, the Taliban.
Nevertheless, Afghanistan is a nation of diverse tribes and racial communities, thus what may be acceptable in a certain tribe may not be acceptable in another, he explained further. (end)
