Russia will continue to supply gas to island nation of Europe

(MENAFN) Despite prior warnings of reduced deliveries, Russian energy giant Gazprom announced on Monday that it had received payment from Moldova for November gas supplies.

Last week, Gazprom charged Ukraine with diverting supplies intended for Moldova and threatened to halt exports through a crucial pipeline starting on November 28 as retaliation.

“Funds for gas intended for Moldovan consumers and held back on the territory of Ukraine have been received by Gazprom,” the Russian corporation stated, noting: “In this regard, it was decided not to reduce the gas supply to the Sudzha interconnection point for transit to Moldova.”

At the same time, Gazprom announced that the Moldovan side routinely fails to uphold its contractual obligations regarding the payment of Russian gas, cautioning that it retains the right to scale back or stop future flows in the event that Chisinau does not comply.

After the Nord Stream pipeline was damaged by an ominous explosion in September, the only remaining route for Russian natural gas to reach western and central Europe is the Sudzha pipeline through Ukraine.
