Biden pledges his support for Russia's ally

(MENAFN) A week after more than 100 Armenian servicemen were killed in skirmishes with Azerbaijani forces, US President Joe Biden pledged on Thursday to defend Armenia's "sovereignty and security." While several US officials have stated their support for Armenia, the White House also gives military assistance to Azerbaijan.

“We will continue to support the Armenian people’s democratic aspiration, sovereignty, and security,” Biden’s message to Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan read, as per the Armenian media.

On Armenia's Independence Day, Biden promised to "redouble our diplomacy so Armenia may look forward to a bright and peaceful future, including normalization of relations with neighbors."

Azerbaijan and Armenia are at war over the Nagorno-Karabakh area, which has been ruled by ethnic Armenians since the 1990s but is claimed by Baku as its own. Clashes erupted last Tuesday over Nagorno-Karabakh, with both sides accusing the other of inciting the violence. Armenia, a Russian ally, requested assistance from the Russian-led Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO), and while the CSTO declined to send troops, Azerbaijan agreed to a cease-fire shortly afterwards.
