Monte Rio, CA, USA – July 29, 2022 – Following years of closure and disrepair, the new owners of the Monte Rio Theater & Extravaganza have successfully reopened its doors and continue to renovate the property. Formally the Rio Theater, the iconic small-town theater was acquired in 2021 and renamed to emphasize its unique space to host a unique blend of community events catering to both locals and tourists. The Monte Rio Theater & Extravaganza has already hosted a variety of indoor/outdoor events & activities. It has been granted the limited rights to screen first-run movies, including new blockbusters such as Top Gun: Maverick (starring Tom Cruise, Miles Teller and Jennifer Connelly), Jurassic World: Dominion (starring Chris Pratt, Bryce Dallas Howard and Jeff Goldblum), Elvis (starring Austin Butler and Tom Hanks), Minions: The Rise of Gru (starring Steve Carell), and Everything Everywhere All At Once (starring Michelle Yeoh, Jamie Lee Curtis and Ke Huy Quan).

Monte Rio Theater & Extravaganza is a multipurpose venue hosting live music, movie screenings, festivals, weddings, community events, and more. Located in downtown Monte Rio, the Monte Rio Theater is a historic, one-of-a-kind, single-screen, Quonset Hut movie theater placed next to the Russian River's beachfront. The property has created an inclusive and fun venue that serves as a relaxing gathering place in the heart of the Russian River Valley.

In July of 2020, David Lockhart (Current Founding Partner, CEO) and Bryan Gallinger (Current Partner & CMO) toured the flood-damaged building that was up for sale. Together with partners Dan Jahns, Kim Lockhart and Paul DuBray, they quickly planned a detailed 5-year vision featuring ambitious plans for renovations and producing a wide variety of events including movie screenings, live music, community events, festivals, and more. Within 12 months of taking new possession, the new partners have hosted outdoor yoga gatherings, weddings, birthday parties, private events, creative-themed events, interactive games & activities, collaborative costume contests, live music, social impact causes, holiday events, first-run movie screenings, and more.

Founding Partner, CEO, and Board Member, David Lockhart, grew up and spent his childhood summers in Sonoma and has been enjoying films at the Rio Theater since he was a toddler. Lockhart wanted to ensure that his son and future generations would be able to share that joy.

The 72-year-old theater was built in 1950 with a World War II surplus Quonset hut and is both a working theater and a museum. The theater houses antique projectors, film reels, and the largest remaining intact and continuous section of the famed 1976 Cristo's“Running Fence” art installation. The walls (inside and out) are decorated with hand-painted murals by local resident artists. It is definitely a one-of-a-kind theater with a mom-and-pop atmosphere.
