Iraq: 5 IS fighters killed, 9 detained


(MENAFN) According to the Iraqi military, on Saturday, Dec. 19, the Iraqi security soldiers killed five fighters of the extremist Islamic State (IS) group and held into custody an overall of nine others in Iraq.

A force of the paramilitary Hashd Shaabi forces thwarted a hit by IS fighters in the Jurf al-Naser region in the province of Babil in the south of Iraq's capital Baghdad, according to a declaration by the media office of the Iraqi Joint Operations Command (JOC).

The fight led to the death of five IS fighters, stated the report said without providing more details.

The report said that, the Iraqi soldiers, individually, detained five IS fighters in the Tarmiyah region, some 30 km north of the capital, and detained four others in Iraq's western province of Anbar and the northern province of Kirkuk.
