Tokyo shares posted losses on Tuesday morning, the benchmark Nikkei stock index lost over 1,000 points, as investor sentiment was dented due to a global rout worries that the international economy could be negatively affected if the COVID-19 continues to spread.

The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average saw a decline of 700.13 points, or 2.99 percent, to set at a total of 22,686.61 points.

The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange lost 45.41 points, or 2.71 percent, to set at 1,628.59 points.

All industry shares declined, marine transportation, product instrument and securities house linked issues were the ones that dropped the most.

Markets in Tokyo were closed on Monday due to a national holiday.
