Sri Lanka Railways to be declared an essential service

(MENAFN- Colombo Gazette) Sri Lanka Railways is to be declared an essential service after trade unions decided to continue to stage a one day strike every week.

The Transport Ministry said that a gazette notice will be issued declaring Sri Lanka Railways an essential service.

Trade unions had protested last week over an issue regarding salary anomalies.

The strike was suspended but it was later decided to stage a strike every Thursday till the demands are met.

The Transport Ministry has now decided to recruit retired train engine drivers to operate the trains during the strike in the event the engine drivers fail to report to work.
