NAKHCHIVAN, Azerbaijan, October 19. The Araz
hydroelectric power plant (HPP) is set to undergo reconstruction as
part of the "State Program for the Socio-Economic Development of
the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic for 2023-2027", Deputy Head of
the State energy Service of the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic
Tural Murtuzaliyev said, Trend reports.
He stated that a corresponding tender has been announced for the
design of the reconstruction of the HPP, and this plant will be
reconstructed in the near future.
The Araz HPP was built and put into operation in 1970 on the
initiative of the great leader Heydar Aliyev. The total generating
capacity of the station is 22 megawatts. The nominal capacity of
the Araz Reservoir is 1 billion 250 million cubic meters, and in
exceptional cases, it can accumulate up to 1 billion 320 million
cubic meters of water in a short period.
This plant played an important role in providing Nakhchivan with
electricity during difficult times in terms of energy shortages.
The supply of electricity during that period was provided solely by
the Araz HPP. The plant has been in operation for over half a
century and currently plays an important role in the energy supply
of Nakhchivan. Next year, the Service will widely celebrate the
55th anniversary of the commissioning of the hydroelectric power
plant.
