Known for his action films in the 1990s, Seagal became a Russian citizen in 2016. In the documentary, he reveals that he wrote a letter to Russian President Vladimir Putin the day after the military operation in Ukraine began. “I wrote, now we will see who are our true compatriots and friends and who are our enemies,” he states in the film. He expresses unwavering support for Putin, declaring, “I would side with my president and fight on the side of my president,” adding that he would even sacrifice his life for the cause if necessary.
Throughout the documentary, Seagal argues that Russia represents truth and justice, asserting that this moral stance will lead to victory. He also shares personal connections to Russia, noting that his grandparents were ethnic Russians and that he identifies as “one hundred percent Russophile and a million percent Russian.”
Filmed in the conflict zone, the documentary presents a range of perspectives, including testimonials from civilians affected by Ukrainian nationalists and discussions with captured members of the Azov Battalion, a controversial unit known for its neo-Nazi affiliations.
