Town in Germany votes to murder all pigeons

(MENAFN) Residents of Limburg-an-der-Lahn in Germany have opted for a drastic measure to address what they perceive as an escalating pigeon problem within their community. Following a surge in complaints exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic, which reportedly led to increased pigeon populations and subsequent nuisances like droppings on outdoor dining areas and balconies, over 53 percent of the town’s population voted in favor of a comprehensive plan to cull the birds.

According to reports from Der Spiegel, the decision came through a public referendum held concurrently with the European Union Parliament election, garnering support from 7,530 residents. Mayor Marius Hahn expressed surprise at the outcome, stating that the citizens had exercised their right to manage the animal population by opting for a solution proposed by the town council last year.

The approved method involves employing a falconer to trap and euthanize the pigeons using humane methods, which include stunning them with a wooden stick before breaking their necks. This approach, while controversial, was chosen over alternative proposals such as establishing designated pigeon houses equipped with dummy eggs to discourage breeding.

However, the falconer appointed for the task, Berthold Geis, has voiced skepticism about the effectiveness of the pigeon house strategy, arguing that it could potentially attract more birds from surrounding areas rather than reducing their numbers as intended.

The decision underscores the ongoing challenges faced by urban areas in balancing wildlife management with public health and environmental concerns. As Limburg-an-der-Lahn moves forward with its plan, reactions from animal rights advocates and environmental groups are anticipated, highlighting broader debates on urban wildlife management practices and ethical considerations in pest control measures.
