Italy`s Meloni emerges victorious in EU Parliament

(MENAFN) Italy's Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni's right-wing Brothers of Italy party secured a significant triumph in Italy's European Union Parliament elections, marking a notable shift in Political dynamics across the European Union. The election results also reflected gains for right-wing parties at the expense of ruling coalitions in France and Germany.

Meloni's party clinched a decisive victory, garnering a projected 28 percent of the vote, as reported by state broadcaster RAI with nearly 70 percent of the ballots counted. However, other members of her center-right coalition faced less favorable outcomes. Matteo Salvini's right-wing League party, despite leading in the 2019 European Union election with 34 percent of the vote, received 8.5 percent this time around. Similarly, the Silvio Berlusconi-founded Forza Italia outperformed Salvini's party, securing a projected 9% of the vote.

In contrast, the center-left opposition Democratic Party is anticipated to finish with 24.5 percent of the vote, while the Five Star Movement is expected to secure 10.5 percent.

Expressing pride in her party's success, Meloni asserted her government's strength as they prepare to engage with international counterparts at the G7 and in Europe. The Meloni-led European Conservatives and Reformists Group (ECR) is projected to claim approximately one-tenth of the total 720 seats in this year's European Union Parliament.

Meloni's robust electoral performance positions her as a formidable figure on the European political stage, surpassing the electoral standing of German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and French President Emmanuel Macron. Scholz's party faced a setback, slipping to third place in the polls behind the conservative CDU/CSU and the right-wing AfD, while Macron's Renaissance party lagged behind the right-wing National Rally. In response to the electoral outcome, Macron dissolved parliament and called for a snap election, reflecting the significant political shifts occurring across the European Union.
