Danish Premier gets assaulted, beaten

(MENAFN) Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen was subjected to an assault while on a public square in Copenhagen on Friday, prompting shock and condemnation across the Political spectrum. The incident occurred at Kultorvet square in the heart of the Danish capital, where Frederiksen had been participating in a campaign event with her party's lead European election candidate, Christel Schaldemose.

Environment Minister Magnus Heunicke conveyed Frederiksen's shock in a statement on social media, confirming that she was assaulted and beaten by a man during the event. While Frederiksen's office has not provided further details, an unnamed source informed Denmark's Ekstra Bladet newspaper that although she was not seriously injured, the prime minister was left visibly shaken by the incident.

Authorities swiftly apprehended a male suspect in connection with the attack, as reported by DR News. This assault on Frederiksen follows a recent attempt on the life of Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico, underscoring concerns over the safety of political leaders across Europe.

In response to the attack, both political opponents and allies of Frederiksen united in condemning the violence. Peter Skaarup of the right-wing Denmark Democrats emphasized that while political disagreements are inevitable, resorting to violence is wholly unacceptable. He expressed solidarity with Frederiksen, asserting her right to conduct election campaigns without fear of violent assaults.
