Us Urges Cessation Of Hostilities In Sudan's Nyala

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) WASHINGTON, Aug 17 (KUNA) -- The US Department of State reiterated the call for the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) to cease fighting in Nyala city, the provincial capital of South Darfur State, southwest Sudan.
The renewed fighting in Nyala and other populated areas has caused death and destruction, the Department Spokesperson Matthew Miller noted in a press release on Thursday.
"We are particularly alarmed by reports of indiscriminate shelling carried out by both the RSF and SAF that have caused civilian casualties," he said.
"Civilians should not pay the ultimate price for the warring parties' unconscionable actions.
"Both sides must comply with their obligations under international humanitarian law, including those regarding the protection of civilians," Miller stressed.
"Every day this senseless conflict continues, more innocent civilians are killed, wounded, and left without homes, food, or livelihoods.
"The parties must end the bloodshed. There is no acceptable military solution to this conflict," he added. (end)
