Doha, Qatar: Qatar's reigning Olympic and world champion Mutaz Barshim will return to action when he will compete at the Skolimowska Memorial – part of the Wanda Diamond League – in Silesia, today.

The high jump event at the meeting – the eighth leg of the prestigious Diamond League series – is receiving huge hype as Barshim and Gianmarco Tamberi of Italy, who famously shared the Olympic high jump gold medal in 2021, will battle together again.

Barshim, who was recently named the best male athlete of Asia, last competed at the Doha Diamond League in May, where he finished third behind America's JuVaughn Harrison and South Korea's Woo Sanghyeok.

Barshim had competed in the Polish meet in 2016 when it was held in Warsaw, claiming the victory with 2.35, which remains the meeting record.

“I have competed in this meet once before and I remember it was a very very nice competition. I remember the crowd was really cheering and I enjoyed every bit of the competition,” the three-time world champion said on the eve of the meeting.

“I am happy to be back, as you know I have ties with Poland, I have a Polish coach [Stanisław Szczyrba] and I have done at least 50 percent of my training in Poland so it is always good to come back here and I feel special competing here. The stadium here is amazing,” Barshim added.

The Qatari superstar and Tamberi made headlines across the world by sharing the Olympic title after tying on both height and count-back at the men's high jump final in Tokyo, two years ago.

Tamberi was delighted at meeting his“brother” Barshim again.

“Honestly, it's always been a pleasure competing together. We were friends but after Olympics we can call each other brothers. It was just sharing the best day of our lives,” Tamberi said at a press conference.

“The track here is amazing, the crowd is amazing and the meeting is amazing. I am looking forward to compete with this big high jumper [Barshim] tomorrow.”

The men's high jump competition for today's meeting also includes New Zealand's Hamish Kerr and Cuban star Luis Zayas.
