Doha,Qatar: Qatar football giants Al Sadd will be under a new coach in the forthcoming season as Portuguese Bruno Pinheiro has replaced Juan Manuel Lillo, who parted ways with the Wolves during their ongoing training camp in Austria.
Pinheiro, who is also in charge of Qatar U-23 team, joined the Al Sadd's training camp in Seefeld yesterday.
Spaniard Lillo, who replaced Javi Gracia as Al Sadd coach in June 2022, quit the QSL side due to“emergency personal circumstances.”
“The Al Sadd SC management has agreed to head coach Juan Manuel Lillo's request to not continue his mission with the club,” Al Sadd said in a statement.
“The club's management held several previous meetings with the coach in an attempt to assist him in resolving these circumstances, but ultimately, the management saw accepting the coach's request as the optimal solution,” it added.
“The club management expresses its gratitude to the coach for the period he spent with Al Sadd and wishes him success in his life and a speedy resolution of his circumstances.”
Pinheiro, who also served as an interim Qatar coach at the Gulf Cup earlier this year, got go ahead from the Qatar Football Association (QFA) to join Al Sadd.
“QFA has given Bruno Pinheiro, the current coach of the Qatar U23 team, permission to also coach Al Sadd Club in the forthcoming period,” QFA said.
The Wolves, who started their camp in Austria on July 1 are scheduled to return home on Saturday.
They will take on Morocco's Raja Club Athletic in a friendly match at their home turf of Jassim bin Hamad Stadium on July 21.
Al Sadd are preparing for the King Salman Club Cup and the domestic football season which will start next month.
Pinheiro's main task will be to help Al Sadd – the 18-time Amir Cup champions and 16-time QSL winners – return to winning ways after enduring a trophy-less 2022-23 season.
