Pakistan, UK Military Discuss Matters Of Mutual Interest


(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) ISLAMABAD, May 31 (KUNA) -- Pakistan and United Kingdom discussed regional security issues and matters of mutual interest during a meeting between Chief of General Staff of British Army, General Sir Patrick Nicholas Yardley Monrad Sanders and Chief of army Staff, General Syed Asim Munir in Pakistan's eastern Rawalpindi city on Wednesday.
According to a press release by Pakistan military's media wing Inter Services Public Relations (ISPR), Chief of General Staff of British Army also lauded Pakistan's efforts for bringing peace and stability in the region.
The visiting dignitary acknowledged sacrifices and achievements of the Pakistan Army in the fight against terrorism. During the meeting, regional security issues and matters of mutual interest were discussed.
Sir Sanders also called on Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee General Sahir Shamshad Mirza at the Joint Staff Headquarters in Rawalpindi.
The military said that the British army chief arrived in Pakistan for a five-day "defense engagement" visit. Earlier, the ISPR said that Gen Sir Sanders' visit came almost a year after Pakistan's devastating floods, which left nearly one-third of the country, submerged and affected an estimated 33 million people.
"The UK's ministry of defense was directly involved in providing assistance for flood relief operations, airlifting in eight boats and 10 portable generators at the request of Pakistan's Chief of Army Staff," it added.
The military said, "Discussing bilateral military cooperation in response to climate change-related crises will be a key focus of the visit". (end)
