Weak May Demand, Optimistic Outlook for Russian Tourism in Turkey

(MENAFN) The Russian Tourism Industrialists' Association has reported that the demand from Russian tourists for vacations in Turkey during May did not meet expectations. However, the association anticipates an increase in Russian visitors, particularly in the upcoming months, driven by the "attractive" prices offered by Turkey’s tourism sector.

In 2022, Turkey witnessed a significant surge in foreign tourist arrivals, with a total of 44.6 million visitors, marking an impressive 80.3 percent increase compared to the previous year. Among these tourists, over 5.2 million were Russian visitors, who predominantly flocked to popular holiday destinations such as Antalya, Mugla, and Izmir, as reported by the Culture and Tourism Ministry.

Looking ahead, Turkey has set a target of attracting 60 million foreign tourists in 2023, as announced by Culture and Tourism Minister Mehmet Nuri Ersoy during a press conference in January.

Additionally, the Turkish Statistical Institute (TurkStat) revealed that in the previous year, Türkiye's tourism industry generated a substantial income of USD46.3 billion. On average, each visitor spent approximately USD901 during their stay in 2022.

While the current demand from Russian tourists may have fallen short of expectations in May, the tourism industry remains optimistic about future prospects. With Turkey’s competitive pricing and the allure of its diverse attractions, it is anticipated that the demand for holiday packages will witness an upswing in the coming months, contributing to the country's ambitious tourism goals.
