UNICEF Increases Cash Aid Program to Poor Yemenis Due to Rising Living Costs

(MENAFN) The UN children's agency, UNICEF, has announced an increase in the cash aid program to support poor Yemenis due to the escalating cost of living in the war-torn country. According to a statement released by the agency, the payment includes an additional 38% to the base benefit amount to help with the rising cost of living. The UNICEF cash program is aimed at providing assistance to the most vulnerable and marginalized households in Yemen.

However, the total amount of cash aid disbursed to the needy people in Yemen has not been disclosed by UNICEF. The agency allocates an average of $40 to every household on a quarterly basis to help them secure their basic needs. The UNICEF cash program was launched in August 2017, and it benefits nearly 9 million Yemenis.

Yemen has been facing violence and instability since 2014, when Iran-aligned Houthi rebels captured much of the country, including the capital Sanaa. The conflict has resulted in a dire humanitarian crisis in the country, with millions of people in need of humanitarian assistance. The situation has been further exacerbated by the economic collapse and the COVID-19 pandemic, which has pushed many Yemenis into extreme poverty.

The increase in the cash aid program by UNICEF comes at a critical time when Yemenis are struggling to afford basic necessities due to the high inflation rates and the depreciation of the Yemeni rial. The rise in the cost of living has made it difficult for people to access food, healthcare, and other essential services. Therefore, the additional cash aid provided by UNICEF will provide much-needed support to the most vulnerable and marginalized households in Yemen, enabling them to cope with the rising costs and meet their basic needs.
