G-20 foreign ministers to convene in India for talks on multilateralism, emerging threats

(MENAFN) The G-20 Foreign Ministers' meeting is set to commence on Wednesday evening in New Delhi, India, with a grand dinner hosted for dignitaries from member states, guest countries, and international organizations. According to officials from the Indian External Affairs Ministry, the meeting would be the second since India took over the G-20 presidency on December 1, 2022. The meeting will be presided over by India's External Affairs Minister, S. Jaishankar, and will include foreign ministers from various countries, including Turkey, Russia, China, and the United States.

At a press conference on Wednesday, Indian Foreign Secretary Vinay Mohan Kwatra explained that the meeting would have two sessions and would be one of the largest gatherings of foreign ministers hosted by any G-20 presidency. He stated that 40 delegations, comprising G-20 countries, guest countries, and international organizations, are expected to attend the meeting.

Kwatra also provided details on the meeting's agenda, which is broadly structured along two sub-verticals. The first sub-vertical focuses on multilateralism, including issues such as food, energy, security, and development cooperation. The second sub-vertical addresses new emerging threats, including counter-terrorism, global skill mapping, and humanitarian assistance and disaster risk reduction issues.

This G-20 Foreign Ministers' meeting comes at a time when the world is grappling with a host of challenges, including the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, climate change, and geopolitical tensions. The meeting provides an opportunity for global leaders to come together and discuss strategies for addressing these challenges and promoting international cooperation. The Indian presidency of the G-20 presents an opportunity for India to play a leading role in shaping global economic and political policies.
