PARIS - Publicis Foundation, along with leading cancer-focused organizations, has launched a campaign to erase the stigma of cancer in the workplace.
Working with Cancer, whose backers include Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (MSK), MacMillan Cancer Support and the Gustave Roussy Institute, addresses a major problem: 50% of cancer patients are afraid to tell their employer about their diagnosis, despite 92% feeling that support
at work
positively impacts their health.
The initiative, formally launched today at the World Economic Forum in Davos, stems from Publicis CEO Arthur Sadoun's experience being diagnosed with cancer last year when he learned of cancer patients' rampant fear of losing their jobs.
Sadoun is calling on companies to take the working with cancer pledge to create an open and supportive work culture for employees with cancer. Publicis has pledged to provide cancer patients with full job security for at least one year and provide career support for them as well as caregivers in the organization.
Participating companies include Abbvie, Adobe,
AXA, Bank of America, BNP Paribas, BT, Carrefour, Citi, Disney, EE, Google, Haleon, L'Oréal, Lloyd's, LVMH, Marriott, McDonald's, Meta, Mondelez, Microsoft, MSD, Nestlé, Orange, Omnicom,
Pepsico, Reckitt, Renault Group, Sanofi, Toyota,
Unilever, Verizon,
and Walmart.
On Feb. 4, which is World Cancer Day, Working with Cancer will launch a widespread media campaign encouraging all individuals to support colleagues with cancer. The $100 million cost of the campaign is being covered by corporate partners.
“It is a tough reality, but whether directly or indirectly, every one of us will have to confront cancer in our lives and in our workplaces. Companies have a key role to play in that,” Sadoun said.
“Working with Cancer is an increasingly important initiative, on a front that many businesses are already invested in. By making their existing efforts more accessible and visible, together we can reduce the anxiety and stigma of cancer in the workplace and positively impact our people's health. Through
a truly collaborative approach, a light lift from everyone
becomes
deep and lasting impact for cancer patients
at work,” he said.
