(MENAFN) The annual World Economic Forum (WEF) gathering in Davos, Switzerland, began on Monday despite the absence of some notable leaders.
Along with French President Emmanuel Macron and the incoming British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, United States President Joe Biden is not going to be attending this year's event.
Vladimir Putin, the president of Russia, is not going to be attending the event, and the whole Russian business elite would also not be attending due to penalties relating to the Ukraine.
Following the aftershocks of a recent increase in Covid-19 cases and issues on the local stock market, which saw some USD224 billion removed from the fortunes of China's wealthiest people last year, Chinese leader Xi Jinping and Chinese businesses is also going to miss the meeting. Only German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen are scheduled to visit Davos this year out of the Group of Seven (G7) leaders.
