Report: Germany in secret discussions to purchase Iranian oil

(MENAFN) An Israeli paper has reported that Germany is in “secret” discussions with Tehran to purchase Iranian oil as part of its attempts to stop itself off Russia's energy provisions.

The Jerusalem Post recited that the head economist for the partially state-possessed bank LBBW in the southwestern German state of Baden-Württemberg as mentioning that Germany is involved in secret negotiations with the Islamic Republic to purchase Iranian oil.

“Intensive talks are already being held behind the scenes with Venezuela, Iran or Algeria to cover Germany's oil and gasoline needs,” according to Moritz Kraemer, the head economist of the Landesbank Baden-Württemberg (LBBW).

Bernd Wagner, a representative for LBBW, informed the Jerusalem Post that “as a matter of principle, LBBW does not conduct any Iran-related business.”

When enquired about Kraemer’s announcement around secret discussions with Iran, Wagner mentioned, “There seems to be a misunderstanding. The chief economist is talking about the national economy, not about LBBW's business. We have a very clear distinction here.”
